Phone Fell in Water? What to Do in the First 30 Minutes

A phone dropped in water is rarely killed by the water itself. It is killed by current flowing through a wet circuit board, which corrodes traces and shorts components, and by the corrosive residue the liquid leaves behind as it dries. Both of those are things you can limit in the first thirty minutes, and both get worse the longer you wait.

Do these things immediately

1. Power it off and leave it off. This is the most important action and the one most people skip. Every second the board is powered while wet is a second of corrosion happening under current.
2. Do not charge it. Not to test it, not “just to see”. Putting voltage through a wet charging port is one of the most reliable ways to turn a recoverable phone into a dead one.
3. Do not press the power button repeatedly. Checking whether it still works is exactly the behaviour that stops it working.
4. Remove the SIM tray to open an airflow path, and take out a memory card if there is one.
5. Wipe the outside and hold the phone upright. Do not shake it — that drives liquid deeper into the assembly.
6. Get it to a shop the same day. Corrosion is a chemical reaction that starts on contact and continues for as long as residue remains on the board. Hours matter.

The rice question, answered plainly

Rice does not work. It absorbs almost no moisture from inside a sealed device, it does nothing whatsoever about the corrosive residue that is the actual cause of failure, and the time spent waiting for it to “work” is time corrosion spends spreading. It also leaves starch dust in the ports. The reason the myth persists is that phones with minor splashes often recover on their own, and the rice takes the credit.

Silica gel packets are marginally better at drying the exterior, but they address the same wrong problem. Nothing you can do at home cleans corrosion off a logic board.

What the liquid was matters — say so

Clean tap water is the best case. Sea water is considerably worse because salt is aggressively conductive and keeps causing shorts as it dries. Sugary drinks leave a sticky conductive film that spreads across the board. Chlorinated pool water sits in between. Tell the technician exactly what happened and in what — it changes the cleaning solution and the approach.

What a proper water damage service looks like

A shop that takes liquid damage seriously will open the device promptly, disconnect the battery before anything else, and inspect the board under magnification for the white or green residue that marks corrosion. The board is then ultrasonically cleaned in an appropriate solution to lift corrosion out of places no brush can reach, dried, and re-inspected. Components that have corroded beyond cleaning are replaced individually.

What you should not accept is a shop that simply dries the phone with a hair dryer, powers it on, and hands it back working. That phone will very often fail again in a fortnight, because nothing was cleaned.

Set your expectations honestly

Liquid damage is the one repair category where no honest shop will promise a result. A device cleaned within hours frequently recovers completely. A device that sat for a week, or was repeatedly powered on while wet, may be beyond saving — or may work for two weeks and then fail as corrosion continues under a chip. A good technician tells you this before taking your money.

If there is data on the phone you cannot lose, say so at the counter and say it first. Recovering data is a different objective from making the phone work again, and it changes the order in which the board is approached and which risks are acceptable.

About water resistance ratings

An IP rating is tested on a brand-new device in clean, still water under controlled conditions. Seals age, drops distort frames, and any previous repair that did not include fresh adhesive has already compromised the seal. Treat the rating as insurance against accidents rather than permission to take the phone swimming — and if a water-resistant phone does get soaked, follow every step above anyway.
