What actually gets replaced

On almost every phone made in the last decade, the “screen” is a bonded assembly: the outer glass, the touch digitiser and the display panel are laminated together as one unit. That is why a hairline crack in the glass usually means replacing the whole assembly rather than just the glass. Separating and re-laminating glass onto a good panel is possible and some specialist shops do it, but it requires equipment most counters do not have.

The job itself involves heating the adhesive, lifting the old assembly, transferring small components across — the earpiece mesh, sensors, and on iPhones the Face ID flex, which must be moved to the new part or Face ID stops working — then seating the new panel and re-sealing. On a common model in a shop with the part in stock, expect the work itself to take well under an hour.

Screen grades, and why the price varies so much

You will be quoted very different numbers for what sounds like the same repair. The difference is nearly always the panel grade.

• Original / service pack. The manufacturer’s own display, sold through official parts channels. Identical colour, brightness and touch response to the panel you had. Most expensive by a clear margin.
• OEM or “original equivalent”. Panels made to the same specification, often on the same production lines, but sold outside official channels. For most users these are indistinguishable in daily use and represent the best value.
• Aftermarket copy. Third-party panels, frequently LCD substituted for OLED on models that originally shipped OLED. Cheapest, and the compromise shows up as duller blacks, lower peak brightness, weaker touch response at the edges, and a shorter service life.

None of these is a scam in itself. What matters is that you are told which one you are buying. If a quote seems dramatically lower than everyone else’s, the panel grade is almost certainly the reason.

Things to check before you agree

If your phone was dropped hard enough to crack the screen, ask the shop to check the frame. A bent chassis stops a new panel seating flat, which leads to lifted edges and repeat failures. It is better to be told this before the repair than after.

On iPhones, ask what will happen to True Tone and Face ID. Certain replacements trigger an “unknown part” notice in settings and can disable True Tone unless the original display’s chip is transferred. This is normal and not the shop’s fault, but you should know before, not after.

Finally, test properly before you leave the counter: swipe every edge of the screen, check the front camera and earpiece on a real call, test Face ID or the fingerprint reader, and look at a white background for uneven backlight or pressure marks.
