The upgrade that fixes most “slow laptop” complaints

If a machine that once felt fine now takes minutes to boot and stalls whenever you open a browser, the cause is very often a mechanical hard drive rather than the processor. Swapping a spinning HDD for an SSD is the single most dramatic improvement available to an ageing laptop — boot times drop from minutes to seconds and everyday responsiveness changes completely. It is inexpensive, it is quick, and it is the first thing to ask about before you consider replacing the machine.

Adding RAM is the second lever, particularly on machines that shipped with 4GB and are now expected to run a dozen browser tabs alongside a video call. Between an SSD and a RAM upgrade, a five-year-old laptop can be made genuinely pleasant to use again for a fraction of replacement cost. Note that many thin-and-light models and all recent MacBooks have soldered RAM and storage, so ask what is actually upgradeable on your specific model before planning around it.

Common laptop faults and what they involve

• Will not power on. Frequently the charger or the DC jack rather than the machine. Cheap to diagnose, so start there.
• Screen dark but the machine is running. Often the backlight, the display cable or the inverter — usually far cheaper than a full panel replacement.
• Overheating and loud fans. Almost always dust-clogged heatsinks and dried thermal paste. A clean and repaste is routine maintenance and makes a large difference to both temperature and noise.
• Battery that no longer holds charge. Straightforward on most Windows laptops; on MacBooks the battery is bonded into the top case on many models, which makes it a longer job.
• Liquid spill on the keyboard. Treat it exactly like a wet phone: power off immediately, unplug, do not test it, and get it in the same day.
• Blue screens and random restarts. Could be failing RAM, a failing drive, overheating or a driver problem — diagnosis first, parts second.

MacBooks are a different conversation

Apple laptops need a shop that specifically works on them. Storage is soldered on most recent models, the batteries are glued into the chassis, the keyboards on several generations are part of the top case assembly, and board-level faults require Apple-specific knowledge. Several shops on this directory identify as Apple specialists — for a MacBook, choosing one of those over a general computer shop is usually worth the extra distance.

Whatever the machine, back up before you hand it over. Any repair involving the drive, the board or a reinstall puts data at risk, and an external copy costs nothing compared to losing years of files.
